Screen Printing

Screen Printing, Silk Screen Printing, Silkscreen Printing, Screen T-shirts, and Custom Screen Tshirts, all refer to the same thing. It means printing your artwork on your T-shirts commaonly known as t-shirt printing.

Screen printing process is commonly used to print T-shirts with your artwork, in small to very large volumes.

In Screen printing, Screens are made up of wooden or metal frames with a polyester fabric glued on to one side. The thread count per inch or the mesh count on this fabric ranges from 24 to 385. Higher mesh count is used if your artwork has fine details. Blank screens are coated with photo sensitive emulsion and dried in a dark room for several hours. Now we take the film for each color of your artwork and expose it in an exposure unit for a short time. Each color is exposed on a separate screen.

After exposure screens are washed with water in a wash tank. The emulsions in the areas on the screens blocked by the dark on the film are washed away. While the areas where light shines through the film are hardened. Screens now have the image of your artwork. Ink will pass through the clear areas where the emulsion was washed away.

A significant feature of screen printing is a greater thickness of the ink can be applied to the substrate than is possible with other printing techniques. This allows for some very interesting effects that are not possible using other printing methods. Because of the simplicity of the application process, a wider range of inks and dyes are available for use in screen printing than for use in any other printing process.

Screen printing is an affordable way of customizing garments and particularly effective for bigger designs. It produces a much better quality results than digital, vinyl and transfer printing methods and textile printing. However, as a separate screen is required for each color applied, screen printing is less economical for designs comprising of several colors if you order quantity is low.
